MONUC


MONUC is the United Nations peace keeping mission in the democratic republic of Congo which was initiated or deployed in December 1999
                        Currently it has 4278 soldiers

ACTIONS OF MONUC
                                i.            Protection of civilians population
                              ii.            Seeking to mediate between fighting groups
                            iii.            Supporting the FARDC
                            iv.            Engaging the CNDP in self defense
                              v.            Prevention of further rebels advance

SUCCESS OF MONUC

                                i.            MONUC has evacuated humanitarian personnel and wounded civilians
                              ii.            Peace keepers have helped restore a measure of security and law and order in the city of GOMA
                            iii.            Re-organization of FARDC units and restore command and control to more effectively defend key areas
                            iv.            Prevention of advancement of new rebel groups

FAILURES OF MONUC

                                i.            Failure to protect civilians (human rights watch)
                              ii.            Hostility towards MONUC
                            iii.            Doctors without boarders spotlights
                            iv.            Failed to gain legitimacy from both sides
                              v.            Failure to facilitate peace due to ineffective political strategy
                            vi.            Failure to highlight the specific goals of the mission
                          vii.            Failure to coordinate  a huge number of actors in the conflict
                        viii.            Failure to protect civilians from violations
